Education of Architectural Students
Part of Russia House’s aspiration is the education of architectural students. Since Russia House’s inception, it has delivered new ways to introduce students to this extraordinary period through lectures and workshop activities (link). One of the workshops focused on archival reconstruction using reproductions of the document and photographic material from the 1920s which became pieced together challenging students to provide new interpretations of how the teaching at the Soviet architecture school – VKhUTEMAS was taught. The response by the students was very encouraging, exposing different forms of unknown pedagogy, the understanding of different teaching methods from an archival perspective, and the role of theory (Space) in designing architecture. The workshop revealed historical interpretations, the importance of archival material, and its relevance in modern architectural practice.
